IRS Opens Taxpayer Assistance Centers Saturday, May 30: What Your Clients Can Actually Do There

The IRS announced on May 27, 2026, that select Taxpayer Assistance Centers (TACs) will open on Saturday, May 30, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. for in person help. The one day event spans multiple states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico. The agency says it plans to continue offering Saturday service opportunities through June.

A few things to flag for your clients before they make the drive.

Most regular TAC services will be available, but cash payments will not be accepted that day. Clients who walk in expecting to settle a balance with cash will be turned away on that point. Other payment methods (check, money order, debit, or credit card where accepted) remain available.

Participating locations and the specific services offered vary by office. The IRS is directing taxpayers to IRS.gov/SaturdayHours to confirm both the location and the available services before showing up. That confirmation step is not optional in practice; TAC service menus differ, and a client who needs an in person ITIN application, identity verification, or transcript request may find that the nearest open office does not handle their specific issue.

Why this matters for tax pros

These Saturday openings are useful in three scenarios, and worth knowing the limits on each.

First, identity verification. Clients who received a 5071C, 5747C, or similar letter and cannot complete verification online or by phone often need in person service. A Saturday slot can move that timeline up considerably, which matters when refunds or return processing are sitting on hold.

Second, ITIN applications and renewals. For clients with W-7 packages that have to be filed with original documents, a TAC visit avoids mailing originals to the IRS. Confirm the specific TAC handles ITIN authentication before sending the client.

Third, account issues that have stalled in correspondence. If your power of attorney has been on file and you are still not getting traction by phone, a client visit (with you on the call or with proper documentation in hand) sometimes breaks the logjam.

Two practical notes. The release does not list the participating TACs, so the IRS.gov/SaturdayHours page is the only authoritative source for which offices are open and what they can do. Second, “most” services is not “all” services. If the client has a narrow issue (lien withdrawal questions, certain installment agreement modifications, specialized examination contacts), the better call is usually scheduling a weekday appointment with the right unit rather than relying on a Saturday walk in.

THE TTR TAKE Saturday TAC hours are one of the quieter wins in IRS service delivery, and most clients do not know they exist. If you have anyone stuck in identity verification limbo or sitting on an ITIN package, this is your reminder to send them the link.
