The IRS announced it is now accepting applications for the Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) and Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) grants. These programs provide annual funding to eligible organizations offering free federal tax return preparation assistance.
In 2026, the IRS awarded $12 million to TCE grantees and $41 million to VITA grantees. Selected organizations can receive funding for up to three years.
Applications will be accepted on Grants.gov from May 1, 2026 through May 31, 2026 for both programs. Organizations interested in applying can visit IRS VITA and TCE grants for application materials and program details.
The TCE program, established in 1978, focuses on tax counseling and return preparation for individuals 60 and older, including specialized assistance with pensions and retirement plans. The VITA grant program, launched in 2007, expands services to underserved urban and rural communities, supports electronic filing, enhances volunteer training, and improves return accuracy rates.
